The structure of Abacues

An abacus it the trditional Chinese calculation tool. It is one the most important inventions in ancient China, which is widely used worldwide before the advent of the Arabic numerals.

An abacus was invented by Chinese on the base of suanchou(counting chips)used in the ancient China in the long run.

In ancient times, people used to employ sticks to go on calculation. These small wooden sticks are called suanchou, so the calculation of this kind is named chousuan(calculation using suanchou). Later, with the development of modern production, the calculation of this kind was restricted very hard with small wooden sticks. So people invented a more advanced calculator--abacus.

An abacus si rectangular and surrounded by a wooden frame, with some small sticks fixed inside it, each stick wearing some beads. There is a big beam in the middle of the frame to divide the abacus into two parts. The upper half of each stick has two beads, each meaning five, while the lower half of each stick contains five beads, each representing one.
