A group of students of Jinan University in Guangzhou cycled north, submitting a proposal to the Ministry of Education, the CYL Central Committee to set up Teacher's Day. After a year, the State Council decided to set September 10 every year as Teacher's Day. Since then, the mainland's teachers have also had their own festival.
Teachers’ Day was established in the history of our country. In 1931, educators Tai Shuangqiu Cheng Qibao and others had an assembly at the National Central University in Nanjing, and issued a declaration "to improve the treatment of teachers, protect the jobs of teachers and promote training of teachers," and agreed on June 6 for Teacher's Day, also known as double-6 Day. Soon, the Nationalist government first agreed on June 6 for Teacher's Day, but then Teacher's Day was changed to August 27 (lunar birthday of Confucius)
After the founding of the People’s Repubic of China, the Central People's Government resumed June 6 for Teacher's Day, and the Ministry of Education announced that local educators could organize the celebratios based on the actual situations. National Education Union was set up in 1951, and educators were recognized as part of the working class. On April 19, 1951, the Minister of Education and the Chairman of the National Committee of China Education Union issued a written statement, declaring the "Labor Day" as Teacher's Day at the same time. However, due to the lack of teachers’ characteristics, the implementation was not satisfactory. Especially after 1957, the "left" ideology under the influence of the “left” ideology, teachers were ignored, so Teacher's Day in fact existed no longer.
In recent years, the Chinese government has taken many measures to mobilize the whole society to respect teachers, to improve the status of teachers and to make better teachers’ working and living conditions.
To further enhance the political and social status of teachers, form a good social atmosphere of respecting teachers and knowledge and talented people in society, and promote the development of education career, according to many proposes from the National People's Congress, the CPPCC National Committee members and people from all walks of life, particularly teachers around the country, as well as the experiences to carry out activities to honor teachers throughout, the State Department issued a motion on January 11, 1985 to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress to determine September 10 every year as Teacher's Day. At the Sixth National People's Congress on January 21 in the same year, all agreed on the establishment of a Teacher's Day motion, and decided on September 10 as Teacher's Day.
September 10 is determined as Teacher's Day because at the very beginning of new school year, the new students begin to respect teachers create a good atmosphere. At the same time, there are few national holidays in September and it is convenient to focus on all aspects of the organization and activities of the prominent media coverage, and promote the formation of good social atmosphere that teachers, knowledge and talented people are all respected across the country.
The establishment of Teacher's Day marks the fact that teachers are respected in our whole society. This is because the teachers’ work determines the future of our country to a large extent. Teachers’ work is closely related with every family, every child, youth, young people.Teachers play a huge role in the development of human society and progress. Teachers are engineers to cast human civilization, and are the communicators and builders of human civilization. The continuity of the development of human civilization depend on teachers’ work of generation after generation. The Civilization of a society, one country and one nation will suffer great losses in the absence of teachers’ hard and effective work. Therefore, a history of civilization is unimaginable with teachers.
Since then, in annual Teacher's Day, teachers have all celebrated their own festival in different ways across the country. Through selections and awards, by introducing the experiences, and helping to solve the problems of wages, housing, medical care, and other aspects of the practical difficulties and improving teaching conditions, the majority of teachers’ initiatives have greatly been enhanced to be engaged in the education cause.
